Portman Prize Studio 2025

As the students grapple with this design prompt, they begin to understand the integral role an architectural language
itself carries as the framework, or the carrier, for the humar experience. This is no easy task. even for an experienced architect. Here the challenges are magnified even more by the range of scales confronting the students. On one hand, the students struggle to wrap their arms around the seemingly boundless 40-acre physical site, located in Spain, along the Camino de Santiago. On the other hand, they wrestle with the deceptive simplicity of the building program of tweive private rooms, dining room, kitchen, meditation room, garden, and library. They are tested to develop a spatial sensibility about both the landscape and the architecture-and execute this effectively across scales. Questions arise about the nature of the path and of the nuanced differences between conditions of approach, arrival. and entry. From these, new questions emerge about how to make a proposition for an architectural response that nimbly navigates the complexity of scales of view and inhabitation. These soon unfold into deeper inquiries: How might architecture navigate layered experiences of movement and pause, or perspective and presence? How might light become a material that guides perception, marks time, and mediates between body and space?
